Black Sea Basin: Sediment Types and Distribution, Sedimentation Processes

چکیده
The paper presents a part of the scientific activity of GEOECOMAR team during the IAEA project RER 2/003 Marine Environmental Assessment of the Black Sea Region, on board of R/V “Prof. Vodyanitskyi” and in laboratories. The Black Sea presents different sedimentological and geochemical characteristics in the eastern and western sub-basins. Whole sections of the Upper and Middle Holocene sediments were revealed in most cores recovered from the whole Black Sea basin. Scientific methods (grain size, X ray investigations, rate of sedimentation and radiogenic measurements, geochemistry characteristics of water and sediments) showed the general distribution of the bottom sediments, at the surface and downward, synand postdepositional sedimentary structures, lithological and geochemical compositions. As a result of detailed sedimentological studies in the whole Black Sea basin, for the first time a complete picture of the current grain size composition in the Upper Holocene sediment sections, was obtained. The data show that the deposits were accumulated in rather variable lithodynamic conditions (e.g. shelf, continental rise, abyssal plain). Processes of redeposition (e.g. turbiditic currents) have played an important role. At some stages "zero sedimentation" dominated, and during other periods scanty terrigenous material was accumulated.

IOWBSRC Workshop on Black Sea Fluxes
The rivers are the main sources both of sediments and pollutants. Their irregular supply from different catchment areas controls the nature of terrigenous sedimentation and contamination of the Black Sea. The role of aerosols in the Black Sea has not yet been estimated. As a result of studies in the Black Sea pre-Caucasian zone, it is revealed that fluxes of sediments and pollutants display a w...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Sediment Distribution and Transmission in Pre-Sedimentation basins Using FV Method and Comparison with the Experimental Results
Pre-sedimentation basins are among the most important elements of the conventional water treatment process. In pre-sedimentation basins, due to different velocity gradients, secondary and rotational flows are formed that will create short paths and increase dead and still flow zones as well as changes in the flow mixing. This will prevent laminar flow conditions for sedimentation and will reduc...
متن کامل23 Sediment Transport and Deposition in Mountain Rivers
In many ways, sediment transport dynamics in mountain environments differ from those of the lowlands. The high relief and the steep slopes are an obvious feature of mountain areas. The cold climate is another factor controlling runoff and erosional processes, and the distribution of vegetation is also controlled by the prevailing climate. Above the tree line, processes of erosion are more inten...
متن کاملChanges in lowland floodplain sedimentation processes: pre-disturbance to post-rehabilitation, Cosumnes River, CA
During the late Holocene, sediment deposition on the lowland Cosumnes River floodplain, CA has depended on factors that varied temporally and spatially, such as basin subsidence, sea level rise, flow, and sediment supply from both the Sacramento River system and from the Cosumnes River system itself, and anthropogenic changes. Through field investigations and analyses of historical maps, bridge...
متن کاملThe contamination status of trace metals in Sinop coast of the Black Sea, Turkey
The concentrations of some heavy metals in sediment from the Sinop coasts of the Black Sea were measured to monitor metal pollution in 2013. The distribution of the heavy metals in sediments of the Black Sea shows a variable pattern. The objectives of the present study were to elucidate the distribution heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Mn, Fe, As, Cd, Cr, Hg and Co in sediment from Sinop co...
